ハイビスカスは直立性の植物で、多くの枝をもち4メートルくらいの高さになります。数百種の種類があり、世界中の温かい気温の亜熱帯または熱帯地方で育ちます。
ハイビスカスの利用方法のうちの一つは「ハイビスカス サブダリファ」種の花弁から作られるハーブティーです。

科学的発見:
ポピュラーな飲料に含まれる抗酸化物質の量を比較すると、ハイビスカスは抹茶 “グリーンティーを粉にしたもの” を上回り、トップに位置づけられます。
いくつかの例を見てみましょう。例えば、水は抗酸化物質を含んでいません、レッドブルと同様に。ペプシコーラ、コカ・コーラ、牛乳は1、白ワインは5、1杯の紅茶は13、黒茶は23、緑茶は36、赤ワインは38、ブドウジュースは39、1杯のエスプレッソは40、1杯のコーヒーは47、抹茶は100、そしてハイビスカスは132。これはこれまでのところ抗酸化物質という意味においてはもっとも健康的なドリンクです。

もし、水だけを10時間飲み続けると私たちの血流に含まれる抗酸化物質量に何が起こるのかを示したものが “グラフ 1” です。私たちの抗酸化物質は、私たちがそれを補給しない限り、1日かけてゆっくりとこれらのフリーラジカルと戦うために使われていきます。
しかしながら、代わりに1杯のハイビスカスティーを飲んだ場合は、“グラフ 2” が示すように1時間以内に血流の抗酸化物質量に素晴らしい上昇がみられます。しかし、この効果は、もしハイビスカスティーかほかの上位リストの飲みものを摂取しない限り1日で消えてしまいます。
ハイビスカスティーには、強度を失う、男性の乳房が膨らむ、インポテンスなどの副作用なしに血圧を下げる効果があることも発見されています。 ハイビスカスのようにペーハー(pH)が 3 以下の飲物を飲むように心がけましょう、例えばオレンジジュースやコカ・コーラは容易に歯を浸食してしまいます。 歯の浸食の可能性を最小限にするにはストローを使う、酸の高い食べ物や飲み物を飲んだ後には水でうがいをし、口内の酸を中和するようにしましょう。 選び方と保存の仕方:ドライハイビスカスはガラスの密閉容器で乾燥した冷暗所に保存します。
